Feeling Safe in my home

If you feel like your life is in danger call: 000

If you just need to talk through your feelings call Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800. This is a 24/7 counselling service for anyone up to the age of 25.

If you don’t need to talk to anyone right now, we have got some resources here that can help in the meantime.

You should always feel safe, especially at home. Your home should be a place where you can relax, be comfortable and be yourself. No one should take that away from you.

Remember, someone doesn’t have to be violent for you to feel unsafe. If someone does not respect your personal space – like going through your belongings – that makes you feel unsafe. Someone who constantly threatens you, makes you feel unsafe.

Know that is not your fault. No one should be made to feel unsafe, no matter what. You don’t deserve to feel this way.

If it feels safe to do so, talk to someone about what is happening at home. Talk to someone you trust. It could be a friend, a family member, a teacher, or a counsellor. This will take courage. You might fear what could happen if you do talk to someone else. You might be scared that your family will fall apart. But if your family is making you feel unsafe, they don’t deserve to be together.

Take your time to think about it. Look at the videos, books, and podcasts – they might help you decide.

You are more than your home life, and you deserve better.

Take care of yourself.

Change your perspective and uncover a way forward for you!

Here are some things that can help you with that.
